Pinnacol Assurance Wins Corporate Volunteering Award

Company recognized for partnership with Volunteers of America

DENVER, Oct. 20, 2011 – Pinnacol Assurance, Colorado’s leading workers’ compensation insurer, has been named the 2011 Exceptional Volunteer Corporate Group by the Denver Directors of Volunteers in Agencies (DOVIA). Pinnacol was nominated by the Volunteers of America Colorado Branch, which Pinnacol has partnered with for eight years.

“Pinnacol would not exist without the people and communities of Colorado, so we feel a responsibility to give back and help improve our home state,” said Pinnacol president and CEO Ken Ross. “Providing comfort to the less fortunate with the Volunteers of America over the past several years has been incredibly rewarding for our employees and for our organization as a whole. We are humbled by this recognition.”

Pinnacol’s partnership with Volunteers of America includes delivering meals to homebound seniors five days a week for the Meals on Wheels program, delivering fans to seniors each summer, and placing and monitoring food donation barrels for the City Harvest Food Bank food drive.

As part of its corporate volunteer program, Pinnacol employees are given 16 hours to volunteer in the community during normal business hours. In 2010, more than 98 percent of employees took advantage of that time, dedicating 5,852 hours to serving in the community. More than 1,300 of those hours were spent serving in Volunteers of America programs.

“The culture of volunteerism and community involvement begins with Pinnacol’s president and extends through the management team and reaches every employee,” said Erika Nelson-Conrad, manger agency wide volunteer program for the Volunteers of America Colorado Branch. “Literally thousands of Denver’s citizens have been assisted this year by Pinnacol’s volunteers through our programs. On behalf of Volunteers of America, the community members we serve, and our fellow non-profit partners that Pinnacol Assurance serves, we are thankful for their countless acts of generosity and leadership.”

DOVIA, a group dedicated to enhancing professionalism in volunteer engagement, has more than 200 members representing thousands of volunteers throughout the Denver metro area. The organization’s “We Count on You! Awards” were first presented in 1986 to honor outstanding volunteers and those who lead them throughout the community.
