Employee Volunteering

Pinnacol in Action (PiA) is the name of our corporate volunteer program, staffed and managed entirely by Pinnacol employees. From coordinating volunteers to building partnerships with nonprofits, our employees manage every aspect of PiA.

Created in 2003, PiA provides every Pinnacol employee with 12 hours of paid time off to volunteer with one of our seven nonprofit partners. In 2009, 93 percent of our employees participated —an outstanding level of commitment compared to the national average of about 30 percent employee involvement in corporate volunteer programs.

9 Health Fair

Promoting health awareness and encouraging participants to take responsibility for their own health, 9Health Fair provides free and low-cost health screenings. In 2009, Pinnacol employees volunteered at our own site, helping 450 participants. Their work made it one of the most successful 9Health Fair sites in the state. In addition, Pinnacol’s bilingual staff visited other fair sites to educate Spanish-speaking individuals on how to avoid workplace injuries.

Adopt-a-Spot

Volunteering for Adopt-a-Spot is one way we support Pinnacol’s own neighborhood. In 2009, Pinnacol employees volunteered 145 hours, taking responsibility for a mile-long stretch of road adjacent to our headquarters on Lowry Boulevard. Our quarterly cleanups help keep the community free of litter, making it a better place to live and work.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado

Pinnacol employees develop mentoring relationships with children, contributing to brighter futures, better schools, and stronger communities. Our employees gave 317 hours in support of Big Brothers Big Sisters' Community Mentoring, School-Based Mentoring, and Sports Buddies programs. In addition, Pinnacol’s president and CEO, Ken Ross, offers guidance to the organization as a member of its board of directors.

Bonfils Blood Center

In 2009, Pinnacol's quarterly, onsite blood drives collected 300 units of blood. This goes a long way toward Bonfils' mission of saving and enhancing lives through blood donations, as Pinnacol's participation will make a difference to up to 900 people in need.

Junior Achievement

For hundreds of students in local schools, the 256 hours that Pinnacol employees donated in 2009 to Junior Achievement have helped educate and inspire young people to value free enterprise, business, and economics. Our President and CEO Ken Ross also serves Junior Achievement as a member of the organization’s board of directors.

National Sports Center for the Disabled

Pinnacol volunteers spent more than 500  hours working with hundreds of children through the National Sports Center for the Disabled’s (NSCD's) Sports Ability Camps. Through NSCD, we’ve been able to positively impact the lives of people with physical and mental challenges. The organization provides quality, adaptive, recreation programs for more than 20 sports.

Volunteers of America
Focused on helping those in need to rebuild their lives and reach their full potential, VOA benefited from thousands of volunteer hours from Pinnacol employees. We assisted with programs such as the annual food drive, where we collected 4,200 pounds of food, Meals on Wheels, and Rake Up Colorado.
