CPI Frequently Asked Questions

What is Pinnacol’s Clinic Performance Initiative (CPI)?

With Pinnacol Assurance’s new Clinic Performance Initiative (CPI), our policyholders can view online performance ratings for SelectNet primary care clinics and choose the right designated medical providers for their companies. The CPI measures medical provider clinic performance, shares measurement results and rewards those clinics that meet or exceed specified performance standards.

What are the benefits of the CPI program?

Pinnacol is the only workers' compensation insurance carrier in the country with this type of measurement system. The CPI directly benefits our partners by:

  • Allowing policyholders to make informed designated medical provider selections
  • Improving the service experience for injured workers
  • Driving improved efficiencies in claims management processes and service
  • Offering potential financial rewards and marketing opportunities to high performing medical provider clinics
  • Provide ongoing feedback to medical provider clinics regarding operational and administrative performance

Where do I go to see results?

CPI program results for primary care clinics are available by accessing the online SelectNet provider directory.

Note: Program results for specialist clinics are only available to referring primary care providers (PCPs), via a password-protected website. Specialist clinic results are not available to the public.

How often are clinic star ratings updated on the provider directory?

Star ratings and other performance information related to the CPI program are published two times each year. Generally, data will be released during the months of September and March.

How are star ratings calculated for the clinics evaluated by the CPI program?

Star ratings represent clinic performance at the aggregate level and are determined by assigning weighted values to the measurements under consideration and then calculating the clinic's performance on each of these metrics.

No star rating will be calculated and published for any clinic unless performance activity has been measured in all required metrics. In the event that a star rating cannot be calculated, performance scores for those metrics in which performance was measured will still be published.

What does the CPI program measure?

Primary care clinics are measured on the thoroughness with which they address modified duty, clinic evaluations made by Pinnacol, timely medical record submission and the accuracy of maximum medical improvement (MMI) form completion.

Specialist clinics are measured on the timeliness with which they treat injured workers, submit medical records and respond to certain types of Pinnacol correspondence.

Why are these measures important?

The measurement criteria used by the CPI were selected because of their ability to positively impact injured worker satisfaction, the quality and timeliness of their care, and the operational and administrative processes associated with claims management.

Can I affect a clinic’s score if I’m not happy with its service?

No. At this time, policyholder and injured worker feedback are not components of the CPI program. Pinnacol may consider the use of such information in the future; however, inclusion of survey feedback in programs like the CPI is governed by Colorado statute, and, as such, must be carefully considered prior to implementation.

Will the current CPI measurements ever change?

The CPI is an evolving program that will be regularly reviewed in order to assure that its measurements and processes are appropriate and beneficial to our stakeholders. To that end, the possibility does exist for program changes to occur, including the selection of new metric criteria.

Are all SelectNet-contracted clinics participating in the CPI?

No. At this time, only SelectNet PCP contracts and specialist contracts comprised of M.D. and D.O. medical providers are eligible to participate in the CPI. The initial focus of the CPI is to address those clinics that most directly impact and manage an injured worker’s ongoing medical care. To that end, urgent care, emergency medicine, radiologist/radiology, chiropractic, psychology and certain other contracted clinics are not currently participating in the CPI.

Who should I contact at Pinnacol if I have questions about the CPI?
