Level II Physician Accreditation
Clinical Corner
April 2011
Level II Accreditation is a required participation standard for virtually all SelectNet primary care physicians. Additionally, the following specialists also require Level II Accreditation: physiatrists, occupational medicine specialists and psychiatrists.
Under Colorado law, only Level II Accredited physicians may render impairment ratings for purposes of workers’ compensation. The Level II Accreditation seminar is a series of lectures and workshops - led by specialty experts - on formulating impairment ratings utilizing the American Medical Association Guides to the Evaluation of Permanent Impairment, Third Edition, Revised. The program also outlines pertinent administrative and legal aspects of the Colorado workers’ compensation system and examines the role of the treating physician in the workers’ compensation system. The program utilizes physicians of all specialties, since workers receive all types of injuries on the job. Applicants may elect full or limited accreditation. Limited accreditation applies to certain medical specialties (e.g., orthopedics, psychiatry, ophthalmology, etc.) where physicians may wish to restrict impairment evaluations to their clinical specialty. Up to 13.5 continuing medical education (CME) credits may be earned by taking this course.
After successful completion of the examination and completion of the Physician’s Compliance Agreement, you will be accredited for three years. The Division of Workers’ Compensation (DOWC) will keep you informed of any new laws, regulations or rules that affect your participation in workers’ compensation.
The fee to become accredited for the statutory three-year period is $400, which includes the cost of the seminar or home study option.* To obtain a registration form or for more information, please contact the Physicians’ Accreditation Program at 303.318.8763, or email physaccred@state.co.us. A registration form may also be obtained on the DOWC website. Click on “Medical Providers,” then on “Accreditation - Level I and II.”
*A home study process is available if you are unable to attend a seminar.
*There is also an audit option for non-M.D./D.O. medical providers, such as P.A.s, Nurse Practitioners, P.T.s, etc. Contact the Physicians’ Accreditation Program for more information.
