Almost half of scholarship recipients’ families were insured by carriers other than Pinnacol

DENVER, May 23, 2023 - Pinnacol Foundation, a leading nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the educational aspirations of Colorado students affected by severe or fatal workers' compensation injuries, is proud to announce the awarding of more than $433,000 in higher education scholarships. This year, these scholarships have been granted to 89 deserving students representing communities in every corner of the state. The Pinnacol Foundation scholarship program is the largest of its kind in the country.

Now in its 23rd year, the Pinnacol Foundation scholarship program continues to make a significant impact by providing financial support to students who have faced tremendous adversity in their lives. Regardless of the insurance carrier, this program assists individuals who have experienced the effects of workplace injuries or illnesses on their immediate families. Notably, this year's scholarships reveal that over 40% of the recipients' family members impacted by these incidents were insured by carriers other than Pinnacol.

Yesenia Meraz Villalobos’ father died in a tragic work-related accident. She remarked, "Receiving the Pinnacol Foundation scholarship has been a lifeline for me and other students. The impact of my dad's workplace accident on my life was immense, from the profound grief to the overwhelming pressure to excel academically. But this scholarship has provided more than just financial support—it has given me the belief that I can overcome any obstacle and fulfill my dad's dreams for me. It has shown me that there are people who believe in my potential and are invested in my success. With the help of this scholarship and the support of my teachers, I have found the strength to confront my emotions, manage my depression, and strive towards becoming the best version of myself. I am grateful to the Pinnacol Foundation for their commitment to Colorado students like me, and I am determined to honor my dad's memory by pursuing my education and creating a brighter future."

"The Pinnacol Foundation scholarship program showcases our unwavering commitment to investing in Colorado families and young people who must live with the life-altering impacts of work-related accidents and illnesses, said Wes Parham, Pinnacol’s Vice President of Public Affairs. “By awarding these scholarships, we aim to empower these students to pursue their educational dreams and create a brighter future for themselves and their families."
