Pinnacol’s Kalin named Most Admired CEO by Denver Business Journal
DENVER, Oct. 23, 2018 — Pinnacol Assurance President and CEO Phil Kalin was named a Denver Business Journal (DBJ) 2018 Most Admired CEO for his business acumen, visionary leadership, commitment to Pinnacol employees and his keen focus on customer needs. Pinnacol is Colorado’s leading workers’ compensation insurer.
Nominees were judged by DBJ editorial staff and an independent panel of representatives from a variety of industries and were scored on their contributions to company success, civic engagement, career achievement and other details from awardees’ nomination forms. This year’s inaugural class of recipients includes the CEOs of Ibotta, Noodles & Company, Vail Resorts, and Denver Museum of Nature and Science, among others.
Since joining Pinnacol in 2013, Kalin has led Pinnacol to unprecedented success, indicated by exceptional financial performance and industry-leading customer satisfaction, as well as soaring employee retention and engagement rates. Just last year, Kalin envisioned and helped launch Cake Insure, a groundbreaking digital subsidiary that has won national awards for its customer-centric reimagining of the experience of purchasing insurance. Other highlights of his recent achievements:
- Pinnacol’s strong financial results led to the company’s recent and first-ever inclusion in the Ward Top 50, which singles out the 50 best-performing property and casualty insurers from among 3,000 worldwide — or the top 1 percent — an honor that reflects a five-year performance history.
- Kalin’s focus on customers resulted in a policyholder Net Promoter Score of 52 (the industry benchmark is 33) and record-high satisfaction scores from injured workers.
- Through Kalin’s careful cultivation of its prized workplace culture, Pinnacol is a Denver Post Best Place to Work for the second year in a row. Kalin was scored so highly by Pinnacol employees in 2018 that he received a special honor: Certificate of Recognition for Leadership in the large-company category.
Prior to Pinnacol, Kalin served as the chief executive of both public and privately backed companies, including a large hospital and organizations focused on health care data, technology and education. He is a national leader on topics related to insurance, data analytics, technology innovation, cost improvement and risk mitigation.
“Phil is an extraordinary leader, and we’re fortunate he’s leading our organization,” said Mark Isakson, Pinnacol’s Chief Customer Officer. “Phil is a visionary with a deep passion for Pinnacol’s mission and our people. He relentlessly focuses the organization on understanding our customers, now and far into the future.”
