Employee benefits

At Pinnacol Assurance, we value our employees.

That's why we've made a significant investment in comprehensive
benefits programs.

Paid time off and holidays

It's important that employees enjoy a balance between work life and personal interests. That's why our employees receive the flexibility of a paid time off (PTO) bank. Eligible employees may use PTO for vacation, sick leave, or any other personal reason. Full-time employees earn 20 days of PTO each year. After five years of service, PTO increases to 25 days, and after 10 years, 30 days. Employees also receive nine company-paid holidays annually.

Volunteer program

Our employees are passionate about serving others, both on and off the job. Through our corporate volunteer program, Pinnacol in Action, employees receive paid time off to volunteer with Colorado nonprofits.

Health, dental and vision benefits

As an employer, Pinnacol pays the major portion of the premium cost of medical, vision and dental coverage for eligible employees and their dependents. All regular full-time employees who work, or are scheduled to work, 30 hours or more per week are eligible for health benefits. Employees become eligible the first day of the month following their employment date. For example, an employee starting in May would be eligible for health benefits on June 1. In addition, our employees' same-sex domestic partners are eligible to enroll in medical, dental, vision and life-insurance benefits.

In November 2020, the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (HHS), Department of Labor, and Department of the Treasury issued the Transparency in Coverage Rule, based on Affordable Care Act (ACA) requirements. The final rule mandates group health plans and health insurance issuers post Machine-Readable Files (MRFs) that list in-network rates and out-of-network allowed amounts on a publicly available website.

Kaiser Permanente and UnitedHealthcare create and publish MRFs on behalf of Pinnacol Assurance and below are the links:

United Healthcare

United Healthcare is a network of more than 3,000 primary care and specialist physicians that contract with hospitals statewide. Members choose their own primary care providers, allowing for increased flexibility and choice when it comes to obtaining quality health care. We also offer through United Healthcare a high deductible health plan which allows employees who enroll to sign up for a Health Savings Account (HSA) to which Pinnacol will make an annual contribution.

Kaiser Permanente

Kaiser Permanente provides health care to 400,000 Colorado members through 17 medical offices and 1,000 physicians. Members choose a Kaiser doctor as their primary care provider. Kaiser offers a wide variety of services all under one roof, including doctor appointments, lab and pharmacy services, extended office hours and educational classes.

Dental

Pinnacol provides the Delta Dental Preferred Provider Organization (PPO)/Designated Provider (DPO) plan to our employees. This plan offers preventative, basic, major and orthodontic coverage, as well as out-of-network benefits.

Vision

VSP provides vision coverage, with Pinnacol paying 100 percent of individual employee coverage. Dependent coverage and an enhanced buy-up option is available with a small monthly premium contribution.

Discounts to a variety of gyms and fitness centers, continued education, hotels and rental cars, healthy eating lifestyle programs, restaurants, tickets to sporting events and more.

Disability coverage and life insurance

Pinnacol provides salary continuation benefits to employees in the event of an extended illness or disability. Employees working a minimum of 30 hours per week who have been with the company for six months may be eligible for short-term disability benefits 10 working days after the start of the disability. The benefit is paid at 60 percent of the employee's salary up to a maximum that is based on years of service. Should a disability last longer than 90 days, long-term disability benefits may pay up to 70 percent of the employee's salary until age 65.
We pay 100 percent of the cost for life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment coverage in an amount equal to 1.5 times an employee's annual base salary. Life insurance is also provided ($2,000) at no additional cost to eligible dependents. Voluntary life insurance plans are also available for employees and their dependents.

Educational assistance

We encourage employees to further their education and assist them by providing tuition reimbursement — up to $5,250 — for graduate or undergraduate classes. Employees must be full-time, have at least six months of service at Pinnacol, and be enrolled in a job-related course or degree program. We also have an extensive in-house training program that offers both career and personal enhancement seminars.

Adoption assistance

An Adoption Assistance Reimbursement Program is available for up to $4,000 once an adoption has been completed.

Retirement

Our employees do not pay into Social Security, except for Medicare tax. Instead, both Pinnacol and employees contribute to the Public Employees' Retirement Association (PERA).
In addition, we offer both 401(k) and 457(b) plans and encourage all employees to take advantage of these optional retirement savings benefits. Employees can direct how they want this money invested in a wide variety of professionally managed funds, and are eligible to enroll immediately upon employment. Pinnacol also matches 50 percent of the first 6 percent of employees' contributions to their 401(k) plans.

Dependent care/medical expenses — Flexible Spending Accounts

The Section 125 plan allows for a pre-tax deduction of employees' contributions towards insurance premiums, as well as the opportunity to establish a dependent care account for child care or elder care expenses. Employees may also participate in a Section 125 Medical Spending Account that allows them to pay for out-of-pocket medical expenses with tax-free dollars.

Gainsharing incentive program

All employees work in teams, and each team has certain goals and objectives it's expected to meet. Under our gainsharing program, teams have the opportunity to earn a quarterly incentive based on exceeding their goals and objectives. Gainsharing payouts can range from zero to 12 percent of an employee's annual base salary.

Leave of absence

Pinnacol provides eligible employees with a leave of absence when time away from work may be necessary for medical, family, personal or military responsibilities. See this informational poster for general Family Medical Leave Act (FMLA) rights.
