Veterans, lawmakers and hundreds of volunteers converge on former Lowry Air Force Base ahead of Veterans Day

DENVER, Nov. 4, 2026 – Less than three weeks before Veterans Day, a Marine Corps veteran CEO, two Colorado lawmakers with military service and a museum community with many veterans among its staff and volunteers gathered at Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum, on the grounds of the former Lowry Air Force Base. On Oct. 21, hundreds of volunteers took part in Pinnacol in Action (PiA) Day, together contributing more than 5,000 acts of kindness to benefit seven organizations serving veterans, service members and the Colorado community.

The volunteers made 2,000 rockets and 200 constellation kits for young visitors to 1,000 stockings for Coast Guard recruits at Training Center Cape May, 300 cards and 50 tray favors for veterans served by Nourish Meals on Wheels, 100 emergency food kits for The Peak Food Pantry and 100 hygiene kits for Volunteers of America Colorado. Pinnacol Assurance, a Lowry-area anchor employer and Colorado’s leading workers’ compensation insurer, organized PiA Day as its annual company-wide volunteer event, with Wings as host and partner.

Two members of the Colorado General Assembly representing Denver and the Lowry community joined as guests - State Senator Matt Ball, who serves in the active reserves and State Representative Sean Camacho, a military veteran. Each offered brief remarks recognizing the volunteers and the importance of supporting Colorado's veteran community.

“At Wings Over the Rockies, we have a deep appreciation for the men and women who have served our country.” said David Dickerson, President and CEO of Wings Over the Rockies Air & Space Museum.  “Many of our staff and volunteers are veterans themselves, and their stories, dedication, and continued service are woven into the fabric of our organization. Partnering with Pinnacol Assurance to honor veterans and support the people who have given so much to our country is especially meaningful to us. It’s a powerful reminder that service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off, and that when we come together as a community, we can make a real difference in the lives of those who have served.”

“PiA Day is when our values move from words to action. This year, we’re honoring Colorado’s veterans, who have given so much in service to our communities, by giving our time and energy back to them,” said Mara Held, Manager of Corporate Social Responsibility at Pinnacol Assurance. “Supporting the people and communities of Colorado is at the heart of who we are, and PiA Day is one of the most meaningful ways our team shows it.”
